FAQ

1. The fan is too loud—what can I do?
Check mounting: Loose screws cause vibration noise.
Remove dust: Build-up increases air resistance and noise.
Lower RPM: Use BIOS or software (e.g., SpeedFan) to reduce speed.
Bearing type: Sleeve bearings start quiet but wear out; double-ball lasts longer and is slightly louder; hydraulic is a good middle-ground.
 
2. Fan won't spin or starts/stops intermittently
Power check: Ensure the 3-pin/4-pin connector is fully seated.
Fan-stop mode: Boards may shut off fan below ~40 °C; this is normal.
Bearing wear: Sleeve types may not start when oil dries—replace the fan.

3. Which direction should the fan face?
Look for arrows: Printed on the frame (→ exhaust, ← intake).
General rule:
– Front/side: intake (cool air in).
– Rear/top: exhaust (hot air out).
– Tower coolers: push air toward the rear exhaust.
 
4. 3-pin vs. 4-pin difference?
3-pin: DC voltage control, fixed or stepped speeds.
4-pin: PWM, auto speed control for quieter, precise operation.
Compatibility: 4-pin on 3-pin header runs full-speed/DC only.
 
5. How long will the fan last?
Sleeve bearing: ~2–3 years, less in dust/heat.
Hydraulic bearing: ~4–5 years, quieter and better sealed.
Double-ball bearing: 5–10 years, 24/7 tolerant.
 
6. How can I make the fan quieter?
Use rubber pegs/grommets instead of screws to reduce vibration.
Use inline resistor cable or "low-noise adapter" to lower voltage (airflow reduces).
Adjust BIOS fan curve: keep RPM low until temperature increases.
 
7. Connect to motherboard or power supply?
Motherboard header: enables speed control, best with 4-pin PWM.
PSU Molex: runs at 12 V full speed, simple but noisy.
Splitter okay: keep ≤ 1 A total per header (3–4 fans).
 
8. The label says 12 V—why does it still spin at 5 V?
Wide tolerance: motors run 5 V–13 V, might not start < ~7 V.
 
9. More blades = better?
More blades: higher static pressure, slightly louder.
Fewer blades: higher airflow, lower noise.
Typical balance: 7–9 blades.
 
10. How do I know the fan is dying?
Listen: clicking/grinding = bearing failure.
Check RPM: use HWMonitor; much lower than spec (e.g., 300 RPM vs. 1200 RPM) signals issues.
Power off and flick: blade should spin freely; wobble/stiffness signals worn bearings.
